2011 NIUE ARTS AND CULTURAL FESTIVAL
The Community is gearing up to hold its bi-annual Niue Arts and Cultural festival or in the Niuean language, Taonaga Tufuga Niue from the 23rd to the 30th or April. The Festival will facilitate workshops in sustaining Vagahau Niue (Niuean language), traditional agricultural and medicinal practices, heritage and cultural sites, Vaka (outrigger canoe) making and Niuean traditional arts and craft. These events are intended to provide participants and the wider community with some understanding of Niue’s intangible heritage and how we can apply them in our everyday lives to sustain our livelihoods. The Festival will also feature Musician Che Fu, who is of Niuean descent and who will be holding his first ever concert in Niue, as well as other artists of Niuean descent from New Zealand and Australia. As a Christian society, the Festival will also promote traditional Hymn singing from local village communities and participating groups from abroad.
The very first Niue Arts and Cultural Festival was held in Niue in April 2009 and was coordinated by the Niue Tourism Office. It attracted Niuean Groups living in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, with a total of more than 120 participants. This year’s festival is expected to attract twice the number than 2009, and will be held during the Easter Holiday period.
The need to bring together and nurture Niueans from all walks of life and be part of the on-going development of Niue was given priority by the Government of Niue, as after thirty years of steady population decline, the risk of Niue’s cultural heritage being lost continued to increase. The Niue Arts and Cultural Festival was developed as one of the responses to reduce this risk, and also to assist those who have been away from Niue to better understand the importance of one’s cultural heritage. For more information see the Niue Arts Festival website.
